Wix vs. a Custom Website: Which Is Right for Your Small Business?

Wix vs. a custom website for small business

If you're weighing Wix against a custom-built website for your small business, you're asking the right question early—before you've sunk months and money into a decision that's hard to reverse.

Wix is genuinely good at one thing: getting a simple site online fast, with no code. But “fast to start” and “the right long-term foundation for a growing business” are not the same thing.

Here's an honest look at where Wix helps, where it holds you back, and when a custom website is the smarter investment.

The short answer

Wix is a fine starting point for a very simple, temporary, or hobby site. But for a small business that wants to look credible, get found on Google, and grow without hitting walls, a custom website usually pays for itself.

Design: how much control do you really have?

With Wix you're building inside a template. The drag-and-drop editor feels freeing at first, but you're limited to what the template and editor allow—and once you pick a template, you can't switch to another without rebuilding your whole site. Truly custom layouts and pixel-level brand control are off the table, and your site tends to end up looking like a lot of other Wix sites.

The subscription that never stops

Wix isn't really free. To remove Wix ads, connect your own domain, and unlock business features, you're on a monthly plan—forever. That subscription never stops and tends to creep upward over time. Across a few years, those recurring fees quietly add up to more than a one-time custom build.

The learning curve nobody mentions

“No code” doesn't mean “no learning.” You'll still spend hours figuring out the editor, wrestling with Wix's separate mobile layout by hand, and redoing things that don't behave how you expected. That's time you're not spending running your business.

Getting found on Google isn't automatic

Getting found on Google isn't automatic. Wix renders pages in ways you don't fully control, which can mean heavier, slower pages and less command over the technical details that help you rank. Your site won't climb the results just because it exists—and Wix's structure gives you less room to fix that than clean, custom-built code does. Here's how to improve your Google rankings regardless of platform.

The plug-in problem

Need online booking, a smarter form, reviews, or a specific integration? You'll be adding third-party apps from the Wix App Market—many with their own monthly fees, some of which slow your site down or conflict with each other. Each add-on is another cost and another thing that can break.

Are you overpaying?

Here's what most people miss: plenty of small businesses pay premium monthly fees for a site that a simpler, cleaner build would handle better and cheaper long-term. If all you really need is a fast, professional five-page site that generates calls, you may be renting complexity you'll never use.

When Wix actually makes sense

To be fair, Wix can make sense if you need something online this week, you're testing an idea, or it's a temporary or hobby project you don't plan to grow.

And honestly? I have small business clients who use Wix and love it—usually because they wanted to be able to log in, change things, and add blog posts themselves without waiting on a designer. That independence is a real benefit, and for the right client it's exactly the right call.

I'm also Wix certified, so if it's genuinely the best fit for you, I can help you build there too. My goal isn't to talk you out of Wix—it's a great tool for some businesses. It's to make sure you're choosing it on purpose, for the right reasons, instead of defaulting to it and hitting walls later.

The case for a custom website

A custom website flips the trade-offs. Instead of renting a platform and bending your business to fit it, you get a site built around your goals: clean, fast, easy to find on Google, and designed to look like you—not a template.

No monthly platform fees stacking up. No template lock-in. No plug-in towers to maintain. Just a professional site that does one job well—turning visitors into calls, forms, and customers.

That's what I build for small businesses: fast, lead-focused custom websites without the agency price tag. See my affordable website packages or my approach to Michigan web design—and if you're still deciding whether you even need one, start here.
